The Amazon - The greatest river

The Amazon is the greatest river in the world by so many measures; the volume of water it carries to the sea (approximately 20% of all the freshwater discharge into the oceans), the area of land that drains into it, and its length and width. It is one of the longest rivers in the world and, depending upon who you talk to, is anywhere between 6,259km/3,903mi and 6,712km/4,195mi long.

For the last century the length of the Amazon and the Nile Rivers have been in a tight battle for title of world's longest river. The exact length of the two rivers varies over time and reputable sources disagree as to their actual length. The Nile River in Africa is reported to be anywhere from at 5,499km/3,437mi to 6,690km/4,180mi long. But there is no question as to which of the two great rivers carries the greater volume of water - the Amazon River.

At its widest point the Amazon River can be 11km/6.8 mi wide during the dry season. The area covered by the Amazon River and its tributaries more than triples over the course of a year. In an average dry season 110,000 square km of land are water-covered, while in the wet season the flooded area of the Amazon Basin rises to 350,000 square km. When the flood plains and the Amazon River Basin flood during the rainy season the Amazon River can be up to 40km/24.8 mi wide. Where the Amazon opens at its estuary the river is over 325km/202 mi wide!

Because the Amazon drains the entire Northern half of the South American continent (approx. 40% landmass), including all the torrential tropical rains that deluge the rainforests, it carries an enormous amount of water. The mouth of the Amazon River, where it meets the sea, is so wide and deep that ocean-going ships have navigated its waters and traveled as far inland as two-thirds the way up the entire length of the river.

So, how did the Amazon get to be so big? The first reason has to do with its location - right at the equator. Around the "belt line" of the earth lies a warm, tropical zone where over 400 in/1016cm of rain fall every year. That averages out to more than an inch (3cm) of rain, everyday! A lot of water falls onto the land surrounding the river, what is called the "Amazon River drainage basin". A good way to understand what a drainage basin is to think of the whole northern half of the continent of South America as a shallow dish, or saucer. Whenever rain falls and lands anywhere in the river basin it all runs into the lowest place in the pan, which happens to be the Amazon River. The sheer volume of rain in the Amazon jungle, as well as the slope of the surrounding land, combine to create the enormous river known as the Amazon.

Big national reserves doesn't guarantee prosperity however, for instance, the yearly expenses for China 's government is $1.11 trillion, their government must always think of economic growth and making more money. The PRC overspent $110bn last year, much of it towards modernizing their military, if it goes on like this their reserves can only last for 22 yrs.

The Malaysian gov't overspent $13bn last year, if it goes on like this their reserves can only last for 7 yrs.

The Singaporean government overspent $3bn last year, much of it rescuing their banks from financial crisis, if it goes on like this their reserves can last 68 yrs.

The Swiss gov't overspent $1bn last year, if it goes on like this their reserves can last 262 yrs.

A country normally can borrow up to 100% its GDP. A very strong industrial country or very financial stable nation can borrow up to perhaps 200% its GDP, debts over 250% GDP the country is bankrupt.

Greece's debt is 113.40% GDP, in danger as it is not considered a strong industrial or financial country, as we already know.

Icelandâ€™s debt is 107.60% GDP, also in crisis as it is not so strong industrially or financially.

Singaporeâ€™s debt is 113.10%, not in hot water due to its global financial hub status, and also its financial strength. It's only dangerous for Singapore when it reaches 200%.

Japanâ€™s debt is 189.30%, still under radar as a powerful Industrial nation. It needs to panic only at around 200%.

The US has the world largest debt, but it is only 62% of its GDP, it is not in any immediate danger of bankruptcy.

Zimbabweâ€™s debt is 282.60% GDP, it is a kaput nation.

Malaysiaâ€™s debt is currently At 53.70% GDP.... would have been much better if not for billions wasted thru corruption and mismanagement by UMNO.

Hong Kong and Taiwan are doing pretty good with debts at 32-37% GDP.

South Korea is even better with debts at 23.5% GDP.

China is very stable with debts at 16.90% GDP.

Russia is like a big mountain with debts @ only at 6.30% GDP.

There are only 5 countries with no debt, and are all comparatively small:

Hiding the Lockheed Plant during World War II

During WW II Lockheed (unbelievable 1940s pictures). During World War II the Army Corps of Engineers needed to hide the Lockheed Burbank Aircraft Plant to protect it from a possible Japanese air attack. They covered it with camouflage netting to make it look like a rural subdivision from the air.

The person that provided these pictures said she got an interesting story about someone's mother who worked at Lockheed, and she as a younger child, remembers all this. She says that to this day, these are the first pictures of it she's seen.

Another person who lived in the area talked about as being a boy, watching it all be set up like a movie studio production. They had fake houses, trees, etc. and moved parked cars around so it looked like a residential area from the skies overhead.

�I lived in North Long Beach during World War II, I was 13 years old. (1940) The Long Beach airport was near Lakewood, CA. There was a large Boeing Plant there. If you would drive down Carson St. going south you could drive under the camouflage netting.� Ed Pollard

I am 85 and had much of my pilot training in Calif. I have been under this net and have seen it from the air. During preflight training I rode a bus under the net and was very surprised as I didn't know it was there.. Godhra: An outsider may find it difficult to believe the scene in the heart of the minority community residential pocket, Polan Bazaar that is witnessing hectic activity. Persons here are planning where to display the banners for the Sadbhavana mission fast and have their pictures proudly displayed flanking chief minister Narendra Modi's photograph.

"We plan to put up these banners at eight to 10 locations on route to the fast venue. People will turn up in large numbers for the fast on Friday. Everybody here likes the chief minister," said Farooq Kesari, an active BJP member.

Also, present at Kesari's automobile shop selling second hand motorcycles is another BJP member Idris Dargahi even as independent councilor supporting the BJP Taiyab Kalandar drops in. The banners have pictures of Kesari and Kalandar on them.

While Kalandar was elected as an independent, he said that he is essentially a BJP member. "People are with us because of the work that has happened during the BJP's tenure," he says.

Dargahi also holds that people were more bothered about development. "Roads have been spruced up and circles have been made. When Narmada waters were brought to the city, this area received them first," he said.

To make a case for their claims, the leaders point out the eve of the 2009 Republic Day when Modi had visited the area and was received by youths. "He came here in a an SUV with just one police jeep escorting him. Youths followed him in large numbers. He even slowed down and stopped at my shop. He inquired about some persons whom he knew from the past," he said.

Godhra: He is a supporter of the BJP and has decided to stick around even after material and rooms in his farm were charred in the 2002 riots. Ishaq Bandi has also been quenching thirst of cows since 15 years.

Bandi has his farm in the Doctor Na Muvada locality on the outskirts of Godhra. He said that rooms he made at his farm were charred during the riots and he was also paid a compensation of Rs 1.6 lakh. "I am still with the party," he said.

He said that every day around 200 to 300 cows drank water at a tank he made outside his farm. "I ensure that they get water everyday barring days when there is power failure," he said. He said that at times he ensures that the cattle get water by curtailing irrigation at his farms. TNN

15 Spectacular tricks to teach your body.......

1.) If you've got an itch in your throat, scratch your ear. When the nerves in the ear get stimulated, they create a reflex in the throat that causes a muscle spasm, which cures the itch.

2.) Having trouble hearing someone at a party or on the phone? Use your right ear it's better at picking up rapid speech. But, the left is better at picking up music tones.

3.) If you need to relieve yourself BADLY, but you're not anywhere near a bathroom, fantasize about RELATIONS. That preoccupiesyour brain and distracts it.

4.) Next time the doctor's going to give you an injection, COUGH as the needle is going in. The cough raises the level of pressure in your spinal canal, which limits the pain sensation as it tries to travel to your brain.

5.) Clear a stuffed nose or relieve sinus pressure by pushing your tongue against the roof of your mouth then pressing a finger between your eyebrows. Repeat that for 20 seconds it causes the vomer bone to rock, which loosens your congestion and clears you up.

6.) If you ate a big meal and you're feeling full as you go to sleep, lay on your left side. That'll keep you from suffering from acid reflux it keeps your stomach lower than your esophagus, which will help keep stomach acid from sliding up your throat.

7.) You can stop a toothache by rubbing ice on the back of your hand, on the webbed area between your thumb and index finger. The nerve pathways there stimulate a part of the brain that blocks pain signals from your mouth.

8.) If you get all messed up on liquor, and the room starts spinning, put your hand on something stable. The reason: Alcohol dilutes the blood in the part of

your ear called the cupula, which regulates balance. Putting your hand on something stable gives your brain another reference point, which will help make the world stop spinning.

9.) Stop a nose bleed by putting some cotton on your upper gums right behind the small dent below your nose and press against it hard. Most of the bleeding comes from the cartilage wall that divides the nose, so pressing there helps get it to stop.

10.) Nervous?

Slow your heart rate down by blowing on your thumb. The vagus nerve controls your heart rate, and you can calm it down by breathing.

11.) Need to breathe underwater for a while??? Instead of taking a huge breath, HYPERVENTILATE before you go under, by taking a bunch of short breaths. That'll trick your brain into thinking it has more oxygen, and buy you about 10 extra seconds.

12.) You can prevent BRAIN FREEZE by pressing your tongue flat against the roof of your mouth, covering as much surface area as possible. Brain freeze happens because the nerves in the roof of your mouth get extremely cold, so your brain thinks your whole body is cold. It compensates by overheating which causes your head to hurt. By warming up the roof of your mouth, you'll chillyour brain and feel better.

13.) If your hand falls asleep, rock your head from side to side. That'll wake your hand or arm up in less than a minute. Your hand falls asleep because of the nerves in your neck compressing so loosening your neck is thecure. If your foot falls asleep, that's governed by nerves lower in the body, so you need to stand up and walk around.

14.) Finally, this one's totally USELESS, but a nice trick. Have someone stick their arm out to the side, straight, palm down. Press down on his wrist with two fingers. He'll resist, and his arm will stay horizontal. Then, have him put his foot on a surface that's half an inch off the ground, like a stack of magazines, and do thetrick again. Because his spine position is thrown off, his arm will fall right to his side, no matter how much he tries to resist.

15.) Got the hiccups?

Press thumb and second finger over your eyebrows until the hiccups are over - usually shortly.

सरकारी नाई ने बाल काटते समय कपिल सिब्बल से पूछा.. साहब यह स्विस बैंक वाला क्या लफड़ा है... सिब्बल चिल्लाये अबे तू बाल काट रहा है या इन्क्वारी कर रहा है .. ... नाई बोला सॉरी अब नहीं पूछूँगा...

अगली बार नाई ने चिदम्बरम साहब से पूछा यह काला धन क्या होता है.. ...चिदम्बरम चिल्लाये और बोले तुम हमसे ये सावल क्यूँ पूछता है..

अगले दिन नाई से सी बी आई की टीम ने पूछताछ की... क्या तुम बाबा या अन्ना के एजेंट हो... नाई बोला नहीं साबजी.. तो फिर तुम बाल काटते वक़्त काग्रेस के नेताओं फालतू के सवाल क्यूँ करते हो..... नाई बोला साहब ना जाने क्यूँ स्विस बैंक और काले धन के नाम पर इन कांग्रेसियों के बाल खड़े हो जाते है और मुझे बाल काटने में आसानी हो जाती है....इसलिए पूछता रहता हूँ |
